In an open letter from the Bühnenverein Berlin, the opera and concert houses, orchestras, choirs, and the Staatsballett of Berlin are urging the city’s politicians to refrain from implementing the proposed budget cuts to the cultural sector. This sector currently accounts for only 2.1% of Berlin’s total budget—an investment that yields significant benefits for the city’s image as a cultural hub in Europe.
Cuts to culture—Berlin’s most distinctive feature—would severely diminish the city’s cultural vibrancy and its attractiveness on the international stage. It cannot be in the best interest of political leaders to undermine the quality of life in the metropolis of Berlin by making substantial cuts to cultural funding, which plays a crucial role in shaping the city’s identity and community engagement.
We would also like to support the petition against the austerity measures.

Call to All Artists, Cultural Institutions, and Cultural Organizations in Berlin
In light of the impending cuts to Berlin’s budget, we urge the entire Berlin cultural community to participate in the collective Action Day #BerlinIstKultur on October 16, 2024. This event aims to highlight the vital role of culture in our city, which has historically been a cultural capital in Europe.
Participants of Action Day #BerlinIstKultur are calling on Berlin’s politicians not to implement the announced budget cuts. Reducing funding for culture is not only a financial error but also a profound cultural misjudgment. Given that the cultural budget accounts for only 2.5% of the total budget, the potential damage to numerous institutions and artists across the cultural scene—and the significant negative impact on Berlin’s international image—would be disproportionately high.
We encourage everyone to join this Action Day, as the budget will be debated again in the plenary session of the House of Representatives on October 17. Your participation is crucial in advocating for the value of cultural investment and maintaining the vibrant cultural landscape that defines Berlin.
