Retrospective: 25 Years laborgras – Berlin
Retrospective: 25 Years laborgras – Berlin
Habitat is an immersive performance installation that invites the audience to experience various real and virtual spatial levels —and their inhabitation—from a perspective of their own choosing. Towering oak sculptures by artist Volker Schnüttgen, combined with a soundscape by Giorgio de Santis, form the overall space of the performance installation by laborgras. Some of the wooden sculptures contain a intimate interior spaces, each equipped with a monitor and speaker—waiting to be discovered by the viewer. Using new technologies, a real-time connection is created between the sculptures and dancer Renate Graziadei, who moves within a clearly defined performance area inside the overall installation space, responding to the live music of Giorgio de Santis, and occupying the virtual spaces of the sculptures either individually or as a multiple clone. Fifteen years after its premiere, Habitat once again becomes a space of experience—where dance, sculpture, music, and environment merge into a multi-sensory encounter.
After the performance, the installation remains open for two more hours—offering time to absorb the experience, reflect, and connect with the artists. The bar in the space invites you to continue the conversation and wind down the evening in a relaxed atmosphere.

The performances in August 2011 were part of Tanz im August and were also funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin. The work-in-progress version from 2008 was created in collaboration with Espaço dos Tempos, Convento da Saudação (Montemor-o-Novo), and Faculdade de Belas Artes do Porto, with support from Kirchhoff Automotive.
“…The team behind Habitat presents a humorously playful, coherent performance that challenges the audience to give up their usual passive viewing position and adopt different positions on various levels while observing the screens. Graziadei feeds the audience with many facets of a person without overwhelming them. A variety of movement qualities unfold, ranging from flowing control to interrupted dynamism and combative, temperamental moves like a bullfighter. A true journey of discovery!” (CG 01.09.2011) Tanzpresse.
