Movement Episodes

Movement Episodes

Movement Episodes is a three-part evening with works by Keith A. Thompson, David Hernandez & Renate Graziadei. The show marks the final chapter of the long-term cycle “The Renaissance of…”

Three episodes
The driving music in Renate Graziadei’s episode foreshadows the volcanic emotions that lie beneath the dance. The dancers act and react, and yet are always on their own. They give into situations and constellations, engrossed by moods, which appear fragmented as in a broken mirror, reflecting an image that can never be complete. Keith A. Thompson’s episode is more harmonious, a subtle melancholy emanating from a longing for closeness, a desire for successful communication that can only be partially fulfilled: time and again, one of the protagonists disappears, turning away to pursue their own agenda. David Hernandez, in turn, examines what happens when things collide. Not necessarily a physical collision, but an interpersonal contradiction driven by the question of whether people simply co-exist or enter into true relationships. “Collision” is an underriding metaphor for human activity and human existence in itself, a phenomenon that begins with the collision of an ovum and sperm cell.

Three choreographers
laborgras shows that dance can be immediately understood without any prior knowledge, and with “Movement Episodes”, offers audiences three different insights into the diversity of contemporary dance. The short pieces are performed by the same cast and individual episodes resonate with one another. This enables the audience to follow the dancers’ transformation throughout the different choreographies, and to directly experience the singularity of each movement language. The choreographers do, however, have one approach in common: they all strive for an economy of movement where nothing is arbitrary. Every step, every gesture, has a motive and leads to consequences.
